Drone Summer Camp

Level 1 - Learn to Fly

Always wanted to fly a drone but don’t know where to start? This class is for you! Your child will get started with all the basics and in no time you will be flying the DJI Tello, exploring cool flight modes, and programming the drone for autonomous movements.

We start off reviewing important concepts about rules/regulations, setups, settings, checklist, and other things to know related to safety, as safety is our #1 priority. At the end of this course, students will put their skills to the test by piloting a drone manually and autonomously through several obstacle courses.

  • Ages: 6+

    Prerequisites. NONE

  • Day 1: Flight fundamentals, demo bigger drones outdoors, practice free flight

Day 2: Practice free flight, dynamic moves, cool features like flip

Day 3: Drone delivery. Pick up and drop off ping pong ball. Winner to most number of balls

Day 4: Drone relay. Need to land in a zone before next drone can take off. Winner to most completed number of laps

Day 5: Drone race through obstacle course

Level 2 - FPV Racing

First Person View (FPV) is an exciting high paced style of drone flying where the pilot wear VR googles and fly over 100mph and performing acrobatic flips to capture daredevil style shots.

We will start off with a FPV Overview, Example FPV drones, Components. Then we review Drone Racing League (DRL) rules, FPV Simulator, Flight Modes. Students will have plenty of time to practice drills and flying through gates. At the end of this course, students will put their skills to the test by piloting a drone manually through several obstacle courses.

  • Ages: 6+

Prerequisites. Learn to Fly Class OR Previous Drone Experience

FPV fundamentals (self leveling mode), computer simulator practice, fly tiny whoop drones, obstacle course, races

  • Day 1: Flight fundamentals (self leveling), demo different type of FPV drones, practice simulator and whoop FPV drone.

Day 2: Practice simulator and whoop FPV drone

Day 3: Practice simulator and whoop FPV drone. Different flight modes. Intro to BetaFlight tuning software

Day 4: Practice simulator and whoop FPV drone. BetaFlight tuning software continued. Drone Racing League (DRL) rules. Simple obstacle course

Day 5: Practice simulator and whoop FPV drone. Longer obstacle course. Competition

Level 3 - Build a FPV drone

Those who want to get serious into drones must learn how to build and repair them. As FPV drones are typically custom made and break often from inevitable crashes, this class also covers the fundamentals skills needed to fix drones (identifying parts, installing, soldering).

It is paramount to have a solid foundation in drone flight as this class will rely on it to perform testing and tuning. After building the drone, we will get out on the field to test and tune the drone using Betaflight Tuning Software. Finally we will learn how to select the appropriate components for repairs or future upgrades.

  • Ages: 8+

FAQs

Does my child need to buy a drone?

Not for Learn to Fly and FPV Drone Racing Drones classes. Drones used in the class are provided (for use in classroom only, not to keep). Build a FPV drone class has a materials fee which the student can keep the drone.

How long is each camp?

Each camp is 5 days from Monday to Friday. Half day is either in the morning from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM or in the afternoon from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Full day experience is an option as well! We design our camp schedule specifically so kids could have 2 amazing camp experience in one week. The time between AM and PM camps will be supervised without additional cost.

How difficult is the programming?

We use scratch (free open source) for programming. This is designed for kids as it is language agnostic, instead using block programming instead. This means kids with no experience with programming will still be able to learn and code the drone.

Do I need to provide snacks and/or lunch?

Yes, for half day camp, please prepare snacks so your child can have them during the camp break time. For full day camp, please also prepare lunch so your child can have lunch during the 30 minutes between the morning camp and the afternoon camp.

How safe will my kids be around the drones?

Very safe. The drones in this class are only 3 oz (89 grams) and have propeller guards to protect from abrasions. The motors automatically stop upon impact. Furthermore, during autonomous missions, the drone will only be operated in a dedicated area protected by netting. See a video demonstration

What is your refund policy?

Free transfers to other students at any time. Free rescheduling to another week (if available). No rain checks for next year. Free cancellation 30 days in advance. Less than 30 days, $100 cancellation fee (deducted from refund)
